The Full Story+

Reliable. Dependable. Adaptable.

These are the sort of qualities which describe a good walking companion - so why not apply them to your choice of jacket?

Our Ascent Jacket combines all these benefits and more besides.

It's constructed using our advanced Barricade™ technology in a 2-layer construction with a rugged polyamide face fabric and a mesh liner combining breathability with fully waterproof protection – even in challenging, humid conditions. The outer fabric is treated with Durable Water Repellency™ to ensure that water beads up on the surface of the fabric and stops it wetting out. This is really important because breathable fabrics rely on a humidity differential to work. Moisture vapour transmission is highest when it’s warm and humid on the inside and cold and dry on the outside – if the surface of the fabric is wet, then breathability is inhibited. Our DWR™ treatment ensures that doesn’t happen.

The Ascent jacket features two large hand pockets which are situated high enough to clear most rucksack hip belts. The zip toggles feature a tactile rubbery coating which makes the toggle really easy to locate and use, even if you're wearing winter gloves. The zip itself lives behind a substantial storm-flap, folded over to keep the elements out and secured with a sturdy popper.

There are two internal pockets: one is inside the storm-flap but outside the main zip and doubles as Packpocket™. Not only can you pack the jacket in it for convenience when you travel, it's large enough to take an OS map. There’s a second internal chest pocket inside the main zip and both are mesh-lined to maximise breathability.

We've given the lower arms, elbows and shoulders tough abrasion resistant panelling to protect the fabric from rucksack straps and general wear and tear.

The hood is adjustable, providing a snug fit with unimpeded visibility. The peak is stiffened and wired for extra protection and the whole thing rolls away neatly into the microfibre-lined collar.

Adjustable cuffs and a draw cord at the hem allow you to fine-tune the fit and adjust the ventilation to suit the conditions.

The definitive shell for the keen hill-walker and outdoor enthusiast. With understated good looks and no-nonsense style, it’s perfect for general use too. If you only want one waterproof to cover all your needs, this is the one to go for.

Washing Instructions
Caring for your Rohan Barricade™ waterproof will improve its performance and longevity. Simply machine wash your item at 30C with a gentle non-biological, liquid detergent. We recommend a second rinse to remove all traces of detergent from the fabric. Don’t use fabric conditioners, dryer sheets, stain removers or bleaching agents as these can impair the fabric performance. Garments may be drip dried. To rejuvenate the finish tumble dry your waterproof on the coolest setting, ensuring it is fully dry to complete the process.

Your Barricade™ waterproof has a Durable Water Repellency finish on the surface of the fabric. Over time, with wear and exposure to the environment, this can degrade, stopping water beading up on the surface of the jacket. Cleaning your waterproof will help maintain the finish. If necessary a re-proofing product, such as Rohan Proofer Wash In, may be used to restore the DWR. This can be used in your wash cycle and is activated by a cool tumble dry.

Fabric: 100% polyamide with waterproof Barricade™ membrane technology and 100% polyester lining.

Lightweight - Weight: 780g
Lightweight - Weight: 780g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 2000ml
Packable - Pack Size: 2000ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 10 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 10 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

2-LAYER BARRICADE™

Barricade™ is a waterproof, windproof and breathable technology that has been tested and measured to achieve a minimum initial Hydrostatic Head measure of 20,000mm and an initial Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate measure of 20,000 g/m2/24 hrs. With our 2-layer construction method, a water-repellent outer fabric and the PU hydrophilic membrane are bonded together. A loose lining protects the membrane from the inside.

DURABLE WATER REPELLENCY™

Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.

5 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

Packpocket™

Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

Nearly But Not Quite

★★☆☆☆

I purchased this jacket mainly for when I am walking my Golden Retriever either in the valley bottom at 50M ASL or in the local country park which tops out at 250M ASL, and on holidays in the UK.

It has had alot of use recently in the rain, yellow warnings from the Met Office, and I found it to be a bit of a mixed bag.

I was out in the wind and the rain the other day and found that the peak on the hood does not project out far enough to keep my glasses dry and with the material being very light the hood just blows about. When I tried to tighten the draw strings on the hood the volume adjuster bobble on the back of the hood dug into my head. Also the cords in the hood are exposed at the sides and when I put the hood up and down they have a tendency to catch on my glasses and I have to catch them before they hit the floor. The pockets on each side do not have waterproof zips and the stormflaps over the zips face forwards so when you walk into the rain the rain drives into the pockets and makes the dog biscuits wet. It would be better if the stormflaps faced backwards and were larger so you can walk with the zips open to gain easy access to what is in the pockets without having to keep opening and closing the zips; the zips are also used to allow air in through the mesh to cool you down when you are getting warm climbing up a hill. So if you are warm and it is raining you cannot open the zips to cool yourself down; yes it is breathable but only upto a point.

On a positive note it is waterproof and breathable. I perspire very freely and other waterproof coats I have make me wetter on the inside than the outside when it is raining and I am climbing a hill. I went out in it this morning, when the rain water was briming over the guttering, to walk the dog and as we climbed from 50M to 250M it did not wet out on the inside.
